I’m searching for a new microphone preferably something that isn’t connected to a headset and is rather high quality, I don’t exactly have a cap as to how much it can cost as I got no fucking clue what they cost!
This is kinda why I made this thread, I got no idea in this area, anyone here who knows a bit about this stuff?
I in basic need something that can enhance my streaming quality sound wise while also be usable for chatting on TS etc.
Although I have no experience with it, I know a lot of people on youtube use the Blue Snowball, and any videos I watch by people using that mic seem to be good quality. I think they’re about 90 Euro. It’s USB.
How much can you spend on that microphone? That’s important.
If you are really thinking about it Knudsen, I recommend dynamic microphone for stage. It will ehance your voice quality and will be MUCH better than any headset microphone.
Professional Youtube game podcasters use Electro-Voice N/D767a Dynamic Supercardioid Vocal Microphone.
Other choice is Shure SM58 Mic. Cheaper, but very popular vocal microphone. I believe it will do for your podcasts.
You will also need XLR to mini-jack converter to connect them to your soundcard and microphone stand.

I don’t think I’d go down the route of an expensive condensor mic (Snowball) just for some streaming. Condensors give very high SQ, very high. It’ll mostly be lost in the compression.
I’d also avoid something like an SM58 unless you’ve got a bloody good soundcard to support it. Generally the onboard preamps aren’t upto the job that a mic of that ilk would require. If your soundcard is able to handle it then maybe an SM57 would be better. I still think it’s overkill though.
I am getting a external sound card to support the speakers I got, its really why I feel I can make the move for a better mic of some sort, I’m prepared to use between 100 to 200 euros, I found that reasonable but again I got no clue what these things cost..
I’m just getting annoyed by my headset mics, and with headsets moving down the road of ‘Good sound, no mic’ or “Somewhat good sound and mic” it just seems like the sensible thing.
There’s been excellent headsets that I wanted to buy in the past, but didn’t due to lack of mic..
I can’t advise on high end gaming headsets I’m afraid. I can tell you, if you spend that kind of money on a condensor mic, you’ll pickup every single background noise that your brain constantly filters out for you so you don’t even notice them. Seriously, every car that passes your house will be quite audible on the mic and the bigger the mic, the more audible it’ll be.
The problem with using something like this in that way is you’re no longer speaking into a mic at the end of your face, you’re mic’ing your room which means you’ll pick up the sound of the room as well. That’s great if you want to capture it when playing an instrument, but bloody awful if you’re just chatting on TS.
I don’t have a condensor (they’re too lively and sensitive for where I live), I do have an old PZM though which I use now and again. If I were to hook that upto TS you’d hear my other half walking around in the rest of the house.
I didn’t really consider that at all but makes sense, do you have any other suggestions?
I in basic want to move away from high end gaming headsets, as they always end up being shit but over all ‘alright’ they are not ‘perfect’ in any area but just over all gets the job done.
I found plenty of headsets that offer better sound that would make my movie and music stuff more enjoyable and obviously also work great for gaming, but they all lack mics.. It just seemed natural to move to some other at the side mic thing.

I use AKG K242 + Zalman ZM-MIC1. Amazing sound quality (as long as you listen to FLACs, high bitrate MP3s etc), way beyond “gaming” headset and you get not bad 6 euro microphone that can be attached to a headset cable. Works perfect…
