It’s important never forget the human cost of war. 17 days after this article was published Cpl Kevin Mulligan and two of his colleagues from 1Para SFSG were killed by an IED that exploded under their WMIK. He was engaged to be married an had a child on the way.
He was buried in Alloa, a few feet from my gran. The streets were lined with people for his funeral. I’m not going to insult his memory by saying that we were mates, because in honesty I probably only ever had a few conversations with him in classes, but my memories of him from school were always of him being a decent lad, confident and sure of himself. He was popular for good reason.
I’ll never have the strength of character these lads and lassies possessed. They deserve respect.
